Detox. It's a loaded word. Companies claim that we need it, and mainstream media claims it's all a hoax. So what's the truth about detox? Let's have a look at the facts about detoxifying the body, and how you can do it safely and effectively.
Why detoxify?
There might be many reasons why you want to detoxify your body. Maybe you're looking for:
Clear, firm healthy skin
Balanced hormones
A happy digestive tract
More energy
And when done correctly, a detox program can help you to achieve these goals.
How detox really works
Detoxification is a complicated process. But here's a quick and simple overview for you:
Toxins enter the body by a number of different avenues, including digestion and skin. Some are even produced inside the body naturally.
They are transported into the blood, which then runs through the liver.
The liver puts them through phase 1 detoxification, which transforms toxins so they are less fat-soluble. These intermediary toxins are very reactive, meaning they can cause damage to tissues if they remain in that state.
This is followed by phase 2 detoxification, which transforms the intermediary toxins into water-soluble substances.
Finally, these water-soluble substances are transported out of the body via the faeces, urine and sweat.
If toxins aren't detoxified in time, they are often stored in our fat cells. If phase 1 is faster than phase 2, the intermediary toxins can actually cause damage to the tissues of the body.
So the truth about detox is this: our bodies do have efficient detoxification systems. If we were only exposed to normal amounts of toxins, they wouldn't need help at all.
Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Why our bodies need help to detox
What many people fail to realise is that our modern world is pretty toxic. That's where the real truth about detox comes out – we do need to support our bodies to detox properly.
Think about how the liver is key for removing anything that could cause toxic effects on your body. That means that it takes care of:
Excess hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone
Any over-the-counter or prescription medications
Products you put on your skin
Anything in your food that can act as a toxin
Inhaled toxins including pollution and perfumes
When you add that all up, you're probably detoxifying more than you thought. And that strain can overload the liver, which leads to health issues in the long-term.
